Victor Osimhen marked a memorable week with another goal as Galatasaray thrashed Konyaspor 4-0 away from home on Friday to maintain their position at the top of the Turkish Süper Lig.
The Super Eagles striker opened the scoring at the MEDAŞ Konya Büyükşehir Stadium, setting Okan Buruk’s side on their way to a convincing victory in the opening fixture of Matchday 10.
The result lifted Galatasaray to 25 points, while Konyaspor, who included Nigeria defender Chidozie Awaziem in their starting line-up, remained on eight.
Osimhen’s contribution came after Galatasaray announced that the forward and his partner, Stefanie, had welcomed a daughter, Liora Audrey. The Nigerian followed that personal milestone with an important contribution on the pitch.
Galatasaray threatened early through Rafael Leão, whose seventh-minute effort was pushed behind by goalkeeper Bahadır Güngördü.
Five minutes later, Osimhen made the breakthrough. Gabriel Sara delivered a free-kick from the left, and the Nigerian rose inside the penalty area to head home and put the visitors ahead.
Yunus Akgün doubled the advantage in the 28th minute, collecting Aleksey Batrakov’s pass before firing a powerful effort from outside the penalty area past Güngördü.
Despite the eventual margin, Konyaspor created opportunities to make the contest more uncomfortable for the visitors.
Galatasaray goalkeeper Uğurcan Çakır produced a crucial intervention to keep the hosts out, while Jackson Muleka struck the crossbar with a header from a left-wing delivery before the interval.
Galatasaray carried their two-goal advantage into the break and needed only four minutes of the second half to extend it.
Sara supplied Batrakov, who advanced into the penalty area and finished to put the visitors firmly in control.
Leão then completed the scoring from the penalty spot in the 55th minute after referee Cihan Aydın reviewed Rayyan Baniya’s challenge on the Portuguese forward following a VAR intervention.
Osimhen continued to threaten before making way for Deniz Gül in the 61st minute as Buruk made several changes with the result already looking secure.
The victory followed Galatasaray’s 2-1 league win over Fenerbahçe on Monday, ensuring they maintained their momentum after the derby.
Attention now shifts to a Champions League home meeting with Stuttgart before Galatasaray return to domestic action against Amedspor.
