Terem Moffi scored his second goal for Hamburger, but it was not enough to prevent the German side from suffering a 3-1 defeat to Raphael Onyedika’s Eintracht Frankfurt in the DFB Pokal on Tuesday.

The Nigerian forward, who opened his account for the season in the Bundesliga against Hoffenheim, found the net after Frankfurt scored three goals in 19 second-half minutes to establish a commanding lead and secure their place in the next round.

Meanwhile, Onyedika played the full 90 minutes for Frankfurt, making his ninth appearance since joining the Bundesliga side from Club Brugge in the summer. The Super Eagles midfielder helped his team secure the victory and return to winning ways following their defeat to Borussia Dortmund over the weekend.

Hamburger started the encounter brightly, dominating possession in the first half and creating several promising opportunities to break the deadlock. However, the hosts failed to capitalise on their chances and were punished after the interval.

Frankfurt took the lead 11 minutes into the second half when Robin Koch found the back of the net to make it 1-0. Jonathan Burkardt doubled the visitors’ advantage in the 72nd minute, putting them firmly in control of the cup tie.

Frankfurt made two substitutions immediately after the second goal, with Younes Ebnoutalib and Noël Aséko replacing Burkardt and Mario Götze. The changes quickly paid off as Ebnoutalib scored just two minutes later to extend Frankfurt’s lead to 3-0.

Hamburger responded in the 79th minute when Moffi finally converted one of the hosts’ opportunities, reducing the deficit to 3-1. However, the goal proved to be a consolation as Frankfurt held on to secure victory and eliminate Hamburger from the competition.

The defeat ended Hamburger’s hopes of progressing in the DFB Pokal and extended their losing streak to two matches following a three-game winning run. Frankfurt, meanwhile, bounced back from their weekend loss to Dortmund with an important victory.

Both sides will meet again on Sunday, November 1, this time in the Bundesliga, as they look to improve their positions in the league standings.

Hamburger currently occupy 11th place with nine points, while Frankfurt sit 14th with eight points after seven matches.
