Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has acknowledged his difficult start to the season after scoring in Atlético Madrid’s 2-0 victory over Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League, Bold Sports reports.

The Nigerian forward ended a six-match scoring drought with a late goal at the Metropolitano on Tuesday. His contribution helped Diego Simeone’s side secure their first win in the competition this season.

Lookman had gone six consecutive matches without scoring before Tuesday’s encounter. He also failed to find the net during Nigeria’s September international fixtures against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau. His latest strike offers Atlético an encouraging sign as the forward seeks to rediscover his scoring touch.

Lookman reflects on difficult start

The 28-year-old entered the match as a substitute and made his opportunity count. Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens parried Jonathan David’s effort into his path. Lookman reacted quickly and finished into an unguarded net in the 79th minute.

The goal capped a strong team performance and gave Atlético a comfortable two-goal advantage. Pablo Barrios had opened the scoring inside the first minute.

Speaking after the final whistle, Lookman praised his teammates for their efforts across the pitch.

“A big performance from the team, all round defensively and offensively. A big, big performance from us”.

However, the former Atalanta forward also admitted that his personal performances had fallen short of his expectations.

“Very happy, but I have not really had the best start to the season myself, personally. But keep on going, keep on fighting, keep on working. That is the mindset.”

Goal offers boost ahead of upcoming fixtures

Lookman’s admission highlights his determination to overcome the difficult opening weeks of the campaign. The Nigerian international now has a timely opportunity to build on his latest contribution.

His ability to score and create chances makes him an important attacking option for Atlético Madrid. Finding consistency in front of goal would also strengthen his contribution to Nigeria’s Super Eagles.

The victory over Manchester United gives Simeone’s team a positive result to build on in Europe. For Lookman, the challenge now is to carry that confidence into upcoming fixtures and deliver more decisive performances.

His goal drought has ended, but maintaining that momentum will be crucial as the season progresses.
