Ademola Lookman made an immediate impact after coming on as a substitute for Atlético Madrid against Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, Bold Sports reports.
The Nigerian forward scored in the 79th minute to help his side claim a 2-0 victory at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano in Madrid.
Lookman entered the match after featuring in Atlético Madrid’s 2-1 victory over Deportivo Alavés on October 10. He had scored once in nine appearances across all competitions this season before facing Manchester United. His latest strike added to his attacking contribution as Atlético pursued their Champions League campaign.
Barrios gives Atlético Madrid an early lead
Atlético Madrid needed less than a minute to break the deadlock. Pablo Barrios fired the hosts ahead after just 53 seconds, giving Manchester United an early challenge.
United tried to respond but struggled to turn their opportunities into goals. Bryan Mbeumo threatened the Atlético defence, while Bruno Fernandes also sought an equaliser.

Leny Yoro red card changes the contest
Manchester United defender Leny Yoro received a red card following a VAR review for a challenge on Atlético forward Jonathan David. The dismissal left Michael Carrick’s team with 10 players and made their comeback more difficult.
Atlético Madrid capitalised on their numerical advantage after Manchester United defender Leny Yoro received a red card. Lookman, who replaced Alex Baena in the 71st minute, doubled the hosts’ lead eight minutes later. The Nigerian forward reacted quickest after goalkeeper Senne Lammens parried Jonathan David’s shot, finishing the rebound in the 79th minute to seal Atlético’s 2-0 victory.
Lookman strengthens his contribution at Atlético
The goal capped a decisive appearance from the Nigerian international. His introduction from the bench gave Atlético another attacking option as they looked to secure the result.
The victory also offered Atlético a response after their 2-1 defeat to Liverpool in their opening Champions League league-phase match. Meanwhile, Manchester United left Madrid with another disappointing result following their difficult start to the season.
Atlético will now prepare for their next European assignment against VfB Stuttgart on October 20. Lookman will hope to build on his latest goal as Simeone’s side continue their Champions League campaign.
