Ademola Lookman has started Atlético Madrid’s first two La Liga games as a centre-forward. However, Diego Simeone has admitted the role does not suit the Nigerian attacker.
Lookman has yet to score or assist this season. He started the 2-0 win over Málaga before featuring again in Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Villarreal. Atlético also replaced him in the 79th minute against Villarreal.
The Atlético coach says circumstances forced the change. Alexander Sørloth remains unavailable through injury. Julián Álvarez is also still building his fitness amid uncertainty over his future.
Simeone revealed that he apologised to Lookman after the Villarreal match.
“I apologized to Ademola Lookman, first, in the locker room, telling him: ‘I know it’s not your place, you were supposed to help us because right now Alexander Sørloth is injured, Julián Álvarez is recovering very well, and he’s the one helping us,” the Argentine coach said.
The explanation offers context for Lookman’s quiet start. His strengths do not centre on traditional number-nine play.
Lookman is at his best when he can attack defenders. He also thrives when he can dribble and create from wider areas. Simeone acknowledged that those qualities have been limited by his current role.
“I understand, and I know him, that he’s a good guy. He’s putting in a tremendous effort, especially in the team’s work,” Simeone added.

Simeone also made clear that the tactical adjustment should not last forever.
“He’s missing what he enjoys, which is dribbling, scoring goals, and taking on defenders one-on-one,” Simeone said.
The Atlético boss then promised to restore those attacking freedoms.
“And we’re going to give him that back, obviously, when we have the forwards available to share those spaces on the field that make us better as a team,” he concluded.
Lookman’s situation therefore depends heavily on Atlético’s attacking options. Sørloth’s return would ease the pressure on the Nigerian. Álvarez’s situation could also influence Simeone’s next decisions.
For now, Lookman remains a regular starter. His first two appearances have shown the sacrifice required from him.
The next challenge will be turning that work into goals and assists.
