Nigeria’s Flamingos will face defending champions Korea DPR on Friday, October 23, with a place in the Round of 16 at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco at stake, Bold Sports reports.

The Flamingos bounced back from a 2-1 defeat to Poland with a 2-0 victory over tournament debutants Puerto Rico. However, they must now overcome a formidable North Korean side to strengthen their chances of progressing.

Nigeria target knockout qualification

Coach Akeem Busari and his players head into the final group fixture knowing that a win or draw will guarantee their place in the knockout stage.

A defeat would leave Nigeria relying on the result between Poland and Puerto Rico. The applicable tiebreakers would then determine whether the Flamingos advance.

Nigeria, who won bronze at the 2022 edition, will need another disciplined display. Their victory over Puerto Rico restored momentum after the opening defeat. They must now produce a stronger performance against the reigning champions.

Korea DPR arrive with impressive record

North Korea have emerged as one of the tournament’s strongest teams. They won both opening matches to secure top spot in Group B.

The defending champions have scored 12 goals and conceded just one. Their attacking strength presents a major challenge for Nigeria’s defence.

Korea DPR have won the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup four times since the competition began in New Zealand in 2008. They are now pursuing a third consecutive title, making Friday’s encounter a demanding test for the Flamingos.

Nigeria must remain organised at the back and take their chances in front of goal. Any defensive lapses could prove costly against a side that has started the tournament so convincingly.

Previous meetings favour both sides

The two nations have met twice at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

Nigeria claimed a 3-2 victory in their first meeting in 2010. North Korea responded with a 3-0 win when they faced each other again in 2016.

Those results highlight the competitive history between the teams. Their latest meeting offers Nigeria another opportunity to challenge one of the tournament’s most successful sides.

Match details

The Flamingos will take on Korea DPR at the Mohammed VI Football Academy in Salé/Rabat, Morocco.

Kick-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. local time, which is 4 p.m. Nigerian time, on Friday, October 23.

With qualification on the line, Nigeria must combine defensive discipline with attacking efficiency to secure a place in the Round of 16.
