Egypt advanced to the FIFA World Cup round of 16 for the first time in their history after defeating Australia 4-2 in a penalty shootout following a gripping 1-1 draw after extra time at Dallas Stadium on Friday.
The two sides remained deadlocked after 120 minutes of action, but the Pharaohs were flawless from the penalty spot, converting all four of their kicks. Australia, meanwhile, saw Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington fail to convert, allowing Egypt to secure a historic place in the knockout stage.
Egypt made an impressive start and broke the deadlock after just 13 minutes. Karim Hafez delivered an inviting cross into the box, where Emam Ashour rose at the back post to head home powerfully and give his side a deserved 1-0 lead.

Australia responded in the second half, after Egypt missed a couple of opportunities to extend their advantage. In the 55th minute, Mohamed Hany headed the ball into the top-right corner of his own net, bringing the Socceroos level at 1-1.
With the match finely poised, Australia goalkeeper Patrick Beach came to his side’s rescue late in normal time. The shot-stopper produced an excellent save in the 94th minute to push Rami Rabia’s goal-bound effort over the crossbar before Harry Souttar made a crucial block two minutes later to deny substitute Haissem Hassan what looked to be the winning goal.
Neither team was able to find a breakthrough during the additional 30 minutes of extra time despite creating chances, sending the contest to a penalty shootout.
Australia’s hopes suffered an early blow when Harry Souttar blazed his penalty over the bar. The Socceroos converted their next two attempts, but Egypt remained perfect from the spot, scoring each of their opening three penalties to take control of the shootout.
Lucas Herrington then failed to convert Australia’s next penalty, leaving Hossam Abdelmaguid with the opportunity to seal victory. The Zamalek defender made no mistake, confidently firing his effort into the left corner to send Egypt into the next round.

The victory sends Egypt into the World Cup round of 16, where they will face either Argentina or Cape Verde. Australia, meanwhile, bows out of the tournament after a spirited performance.
