Taiwo Awoniyi, on Wednesday, met with the Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, to discuss the future of youth development through sport and ways to create stronger pathways for young athletes across Nigeria.

The Nottingham Forest striker disclosed details of the meeting in a post shared on his Instagram handle, highlighting his vision for creating sustainable structures that will help nurture future generations of Nigerian athletes.

“A productive and inspiring meeting with the Chairman of the National Sports Commission as we discussed the future of youth development through sport and the opportunities to create stronger pathways for young athletes across Nigeria,” Awoniyi wrote.

“This conversation reinforced my belief that lasting change begins with investing in the next generation. Through the Kwara Kiddies League and Unicorn Academy, my vision is to create an environment where young people can develop not only as footballers but also as leaders, through quality coaching, education, mentorship, and opportunities to reach the highest level,” he continued.

“I believe the future of Nigerian football lies in building sustainable structures, not just discovering talent. When government, private organisations, communities, and individuals work together with a shared purpose, we can create opportunities that will impact generations to come.”

“The dream is bigger than football—it’s about building a legacy that empowers young people and showcases Nigeria to the world,” he concluded.

The meeting is the latest evidence of Awoniyi’s growing influence away from the football pitch. Widely regarded for his commitment to community development, the 28-year-old became the majority shareholder of the Kwara Kiddies League in July 2025, deepening his investment in grassroots football and youth development in his home state.

In March 2025, Awoniyi partnered with Himmah, a Nottingham-based charity, to sponsor the provision of hot meals for Muslims during Ramadan, helping members of the community break their fast.

His efforts last year earned him recognition as the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Community Champion for the 2024-25 season, an award presented to players who make significant contributions to their local communities.

On the pitch, Awoniyi may remain with Premier League side Nottingham Forest for the 2026/27 campaign. The Nigerian international made 18 appearances for the club last season, scoring four goals and registering one assist.
