Qatar secured the first World Cup point in the nation’s history after captain Boualem Khoukhi scored deep into stoppage time to earn a 1-1 draw against Switzerland in their opening Group B fixture of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Switzerland appeared to be heading for victory after Breel Embolo converted a first-half penalty, but Khoukhi’s powerful header in the 94th minute sparked wild celebrations inside San Francisco Bay Area Stadium.
The veteran defender once again proved his importance to Qatar. Khoukhi captained the side and defended resolutely throughout the contest before moving forward in the closing stages. His late goal ensured Qatar avoided another World Cup defeat after losing all three matches during their home tournament in 2022.

A superb delivery from the left found Khoukhi at the back post, and the defender rose highest to beat goalkeeper Gregor Kobel with a thumping header.
Switzerland dominated large parts of the match and created numerous opportunities to extend their lead. Embolo also missed a golden chance late in the game as the Swiss failed to capitalise on their superiority.
The Europeans registered 24 shots but found the net only once, allowing Qatar to remain in the contest.
The result leaves Group B wide open ahead of the remaining fixtures and gives Qatar a memorable first point on football’s biggest stage.
