Kelechi Iheanacho has reignited discussion around a return to the Nigeria national team after delivering a decisive performance for Celtic FC in the Scottish Cup semi-final. ‎‎

The Nigerian forward scored twice in extra time to help his side overpower St Mirren in a dramatic encounter at Hampden Park, drawing fresh attention from former internationals and fans.‎‎

The 29-year-old has endured a disrupted season due to recurring injuries, particularly hamstring issues. Despite that, he has still produced six goals and one assist in 18 appearances since joining Celtic. ‎‎His recent form includes a match-winning goal against Dundee FC and a brace in the semi-final clash, underlining his growing influence at a crucial stage of the campaign.‎‎

Celtic’s semi-final clash turned into a tense battle after St Mirren fought back to level at 2-2. However, Iheanacho changed the game’s momentum in extra time. Coming off the bench, he scored twice in quick succession as Celtic netted four goals within six minutes to seal an emphatic victory.

‎‎His clinical finishing and movement in the final third proved decisive. The performance highlighted his ability to deliver under pressure, especially in knockout competitions where moments define outcomes.

‎‎Mutiu Adepoju Backs National Team Return‎‎

Former Nigeria international Mutiu Adepoju has publicly supported Iheanacho’s return to the Super Eagles setup following his resurgence in Scotland.

‎‎“Kelechi has always been a very good player and a good scorer who has done very well over the years,” Adepoju said.‎‎

“Unfortunately, these past few years he has not been finding it easy and all that. I’m happy that he is coming back and he is doing very well in Celtic. I just believe he will be able to sustain that and continue.”‎‎

He also addressed concerns about league quality comparisons, insisting the Scottish Premiership remains competitive.

‎‎“Comparing La Liga and the Scottish Premiership, they are two different countries, two different leagues. Yes, La Liga is popular and strong, but I believe it’s not that easy playing in the Scottish league as well. There are other good teams in the league; I believe they are strong too.”‎‎

Iheanacho, who previously featured for clubs like Leicester City and Manchester City, has seen his international role reduced in recent months. Nigeria’s evolving squad profile has favored younger options, leaving him out of recent qualifiers.‎‎

However, Adepoju believes experience remains vital.‎‎

“Experience matters, and if he is doing very well and I believe if the handlers of the national team see and find him worthy, then he can still come back. I believe he has that ability to come back to the team.”

‎‎With his form improving at Celtic, Iheanacho now has a clear opportunity to force his way back into contention ahead of upcoming international competitions.
