Victor Boniface has come under scrutiny following his return from injury, with former Werder Bremen captain Max Kruse raising concerns about the striker’s physical condition and overall commitment.
The Nigerian forward, currently on loan at Werder Bremen, recently resumed training after a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to a knee injury. While his return had initially sparked optimism, attention has quickly shifted to his fitness levels, with questions emerging over his readiness to compete at the highest level.
Kruse, speaking on the Flatterball podcast, did not hold back in his assessment of the 25-year-old. The former Germany international suggested that Boniface may not be approaching his career with the level of seriousness expected, despite possessing significant talent.
“I think he’s already given up on his career. He actually still has his best years ahead of him,” Kruse said.“That’s a real shame, because he has such great potential.”
Kruse also reflected on the challenges of regaining fitness, warning that rapid physical transformation is unrealistic, particularly after a long injury layoff.
“It doesn’t work if you say overnight, ‘I’m just going to lose 10 to 15 kilos with four weeks of training,’” he added.

Adding to the criticism, former Werder Bremen forward Martin Harnik questioned Boniface’s condition upon returning to team training, suggesting that the striker had reported back below the expected fitness standards.
“He’s carrying a considerable amount of weight. When I join team training, I need to be as fit as possible. But he’s mistaken fit for fat,” Harnik said.
The Austrian also expressed concern over the potential impact on Boniface’s recovery, particularly following knee surgery, emphasizing the importance of maintaining optimal physical condition to avoid further complications.
Despite the external criticism, head coach Daniel Thioune has adopted a more measured stance. While acknowledging that the striker is not yet at peak fitness, Thioune has pointed to Boniface’s attitude and quality as key factors in his potential return.
“There’s no denying that he’s carrying a few extra pounds. He knows it, we know it,” Thioune said. “But for me, it’s less about fitness and more about attitude. I see his quality and the opportunity for him to become a factor again.”
Boniface’s season has been disrupted by injuries and inconsistent form, limiting his impact since joining the Bundesliga side. With Werder Bremen battling through a crucial stage of the campaign, his availability could still prove important, even if initially from the bench.
However, the spotlight now firmly rests on the striker’s ability to regain full fitness and silence doubts surrounding his professionalism. With his prime years still ahead, Boniface faces a critical period in his career as he looks to re-establish himself both physically and competitively.
