Nigerian sprint sensation Kanyinsola Ajayi delivered a historic performance to win the men’s 60 metres at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships, clocking 6.45 seconds to equal both the African record and the NCAA collegiate record.
Representing Auburn Tigers track and field, Ajayi powered to victory in a high-quality final, edging American sprinter Jelani Watkins, who claimed silver in 6.48 seconds.
The Nigerian had earlier matched the collegiate record this season and repeated the feat in the championship race, becoming the first athlete this year to equal the mark twice.

Another Nigerian, Israel Okon, also impressed in the final, finishing fifth in 6.57 seconds to cap a strong outing for his team.
Ajayi’s landmark run highlights his growing status as one of the fastest short sprinters in collegiate athletics and further underscores Nigeria’s strong presence at the championship, where several Nigerian athletes delivered standout performances.
With the African record now under his belt and an NCAA title secured, Ajayi’s latest achievement places him firmly among the elite sprinters to watch in global track and field.
