…South Africa could replace Morocco as 2026 WAFCON host

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has rescheduled the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (2026 WAFCON), originally planned for March in Morocco, to 25 July – 16 August 2026.

The 2026 WAFCON was initially scheduled to take place from 17 March to 3 April 2026, but CAF opted to postpone the tournament due to unforeseen circumstances following consultations with its partners, including world football’s governing body, FIFA.

CAF confirmed the postponement in a statement released on Thursday. However, there has been no official clarification on whether Morocco will still host the tournament or if the hosting rights could be reassigned to another country.

“In October 2024, the Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) granted the hosting rights for the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2026 to Morocco and the tournament was scheduled for 17 March to 3 April 2026,” the statement read.

“After discussions between CAF and its partners, FIFA and other stakeholders, CAF decided to reschedule the dates of the TotalEnergies CAF WAFCON 2026 to 25 July – 16 August 2026 to ensure the success of this important women’s competition, in light of certain unforeseen circumstances.

“Preparations for the TotalEnergies CAF WAFCON 2026 are underway and all parties remain confident that the tournament will be very successful.”

Concerns had recently emerged over whether the competition would proceed as originally scheduled, following reports suggesting that Morocco might withdraw from hosting duties.

While CAF has not confirmed any withdrawal by Morocco, reports indicate that several countries have expressed interest in staging the tournament should the North African nation step aside. South Africa, Algeria and Egypt are among the countries reportedly linked with a potential bid.

Morocco has hosted the last two editions of the competition, with the women’s national team reaching the final on both occasions, but falling short of lifting the trophy each time.
