Nigerian athletes Esther Joseph, Ella Onojuvwevwo, Israel Okon, Kanyinsola Ajayi, and Nicholas Fakorede delivered a string of impressive performances at the SEC Indoor Championships, highlighted by heat victories, season’s bests, and multiple qualifications for the finals.

Esther Joseph produced a determined run in her women’s 400m heat, clocking 52.71 seconds to take the win in dramatic fashion. Joseph got off to a strong start and was second at the 200m mark as she closed in on Shaqueena Foote. In a tense moment on the bend, Foote appeared to make contact after giving way, briefly impeding Joseph’s progress and nearly bringing her to a halt.

Despite the setback, Joseph showed remarkable composure and strength in the closing stages, making up the deficit in the final 50 metres to surge past Foote, who finished in 52.87s. Unfortunately, her time was not enough to secure a place in the final, as qualification was determined strictly by overall times.

Ella Onojuvwevwo also made a strong statement in the women’s 400m, opening her season with a commanding victory in her heat. Running out of a tight lane three, she clocked 51.79s to finish ahead of Tyra Cox (52.46s) and Lacarthea Cooper (52.93s), signaling solid early-season form.

On the men’s side, Israel Okon continued his fine run at the championships. After already securing qualification for the 200m final, Okon posted a season’s best of 6.53s in his 60m heat to advance to the final. He was narrowly edged for the heat win by Karabo Letebele, who was awarded first place by just 0.007 seconds despite both athletes recording identical times.

Okon becomes the third Nigerian to reach the 60m final, joining Kanyinsola Ajayi and Nicholas Fakorede.

Ajayi was particularly impressive, storming to a season’s best of 6.52s to win his heat and qualify as the fastest man heading into the final. He finished comfortably ahead of Jamarion Stubbs, who placed second in 6.66s.

Nicholas Fakorede also delivered a standout performance, powering to a season’s best of 6.58s to win his 60m heat and secure his place in the final. In an eye-catching race, Fakorede defeated NCAA leader Davonte Howell, who finished second in 6.63s, while T’Mars McCallum placed third in 6.72s.

With multiple finalists and strong performances across both the sprints and quarter-mile events, Nigerian athletes once again underlined their growing influence on the collegiate indoor stage.
