Latvian top-flight club BFC Daugavpils have announced the signing of explosive Nigerian forward Joel Yakubu on loan from Czech side Slovan Liberec until the end of the season, Bold Sports reports.

The highly rated 20-year-old has been granted permission by his parent club to move on loan in search of regular first-team football after successfully breaking into the senior setup from Slovan Liberec’s B team.

Daugavpils confirmed the arrival of the Nigerian winger on Monday, revealing that Yakubu will link up with the squad during pre-season ahead of the start of the 2026 Latvian Higher League campaign.

“We are pleased to announce that we have reached an agreement with the Czech club Slovan Liberec for the loan of winger Joel Yakubu until the end of the season,” the club said in a statement on Instagram.

“Joel has successfully proven himself in test matches and will delight us with his performances throughout the season. Yakubu will join the team’s pre-season squad ahead of the start of the Latvian Higher League.”

The Nigerian youngster is expected to play a key role for his new club as Daugavpils look to challenge established Latvian powerhouses such as Riga FC and RFS in the upcoming season.

Yakubu joined Slovan Liberec professionally in the summer of 2024 from Abuja-based side Mahanaim FC. He made 16 appearances for Slovan Liberec’s B team last season, scoring once and providing four assists.

In his first season at the club, he scored five goals and provided two assists in 18 games for Slovan Liberec’s B side.
