Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong is set to continue his career in the Middle East after agreeing a move to Qatari side Al Ahli SC from Saudi Pro League club Al Kholood, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
The 32-year-old Nigerian defender is expected to sign a contract that will run until June 2028, bringing an end to his one-and-a-half-year stint with Al Kholood. Troost-Ekong made 49 appearances for the Saudi club, playing a key role in their fight to maintain their status in the top flight, and also serving as the team’s captain.
The transfer represents another significant chapter in the career of the experienced centre-back, who announced his retirement from international football late last year. Troost-Ekong called time on a decade-long spell with the Super Eagles, during which he established himself as one of Nigeria’s most reliable defensive figures and served as national team captain.
Troost-Ekong began his senior career in the Netherlands with FC Groningen and FC Dordrecht before joining Belgian side KAA Gent in July 2015. He was immediately loaned out to Norwegian club FK Haugesund, where he gained valuable first-team experience.
In 2017, he moved to Turkey to join SĂĽper Lig side Bursaspor, spending one season before earning a switch to Serie A outfit Udinese. His performances in Italy paved the way for a move to England, as he signed for EFL Championship club Watford in 2020.

The Nigerian later returned to Italy in January 2023 on loan with Salernitana before securing a permanent move to Greek giants PAOK later that year. In August 2024, he joined Al Kholood, adding further experience to his résumé and helping the club stay in the Saudi Pro League.
Now set for a new challenge in Qatar with Al Ahli SC, Troost-Ekong’s move underlines his continued relevance at club level, even after stepping away from international football, as he prepares for the next phase of his career.
