Trabzonspor have completed the signing of Nigerian defender Chibuike Nwaiwu from Austrian Bundesliga side Wolfsberger AC, the Turkish Super Lig club announced on Wednesday.
The 22-year-old joins the Black Sea outfit on a four-year contract, ending a standout spell in Austria after previously rising to prominence with Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) giants Enyimba.
Although official figures were not disclosed by the clubs, reports indicate that Wolfsberger AC will receive a guaranteed fee of €5.5 million, with add-ons pushing the total package to as much as €9 million. The transfer represents a landmark deal for the Austrian side, making Nwaiwu the most expensive sale in the club’s history, surpassing the €5 million move of Ivorian striker Mohamed Bamba to Lorient in January 2024.

Trabzonspor confirmed the transfer in a statement on their official website, saying: “An agreement has been reached with Wolfsberger AC club and the player himself regarding the permanent transfer of professional football player Chibuike Nwaiwu to our club.”
The club also confirmed that the versatile defender successfully completed his medical examinations at Acıbadem Fulya Hospital.
Nwaiwu’s move continues Trabzonspor’s tradition of recruiting Nigerian talent. He will link up with compatriots Anthony Nwakaeme and Paul Onuachu at the Papara Park. While Nwakaeme has featured only twice for the club this season, Onuachu has been a key figure under head coach Fatih Tekke, registering 11 goals and one assist in 16 appearances.

For Nwaiwu, the transfer marks another significant step in a rapidly ascending career path that has taken him from the NPFL to the Austrian Bundesliga and now to one of Turkey’s most prominent clubs, where he will be expected to bolster Trabzonspor’s squad.
