The Atlanta Hawks have waived Nigerian center Charles Bassey and American guard Lamont Butler ahead of the start of the 2025/26 NBA season, while retaining center N’Faly Dante on their regular-season roster.
Bassey, who joined the Hawks in September on an Exhibit 10 contract, delivered a solid showing during preseason. However, the franchise ultimately decided he did not fit the player profile needed for the upcoming campaign.
ESPN’s Ohm Youngmisuk confirmed the development on X (formerly Twitter), writing, “The Atlanta Hawks have waived Charles Bassey and Lamont Butler, according to league sources. Center N’Faly Dante will make the regular season roster.”

Bassey, a 2021 NBA Draft second-round pick, could still find a new team before the season tips off, with the Boston Celtics reportedly among those showing interest.
The Nigerian big man has also drawn attention from EuroLeague side Partizan Belgrade.
