Ogunmodede marks 100th game as head coach

Remo Stars head coach Daniel Ogunmodede says he is satisfied with his team’s 1-1 draw against Rivers United in their 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League season opener at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta, although he admits he would have preferred a win to mark his 100th game in charge of the club.

Former Remo Stars player Aniekeme Okon opened the scoring for Rivers United in the second minute, but Victor Mbaoma responded with a brilliant equalizer just six minutes later. Despite both teams pushing for a winner, solid defending at both ends ensured the points were shared after 90 minutes.

Reacting to the result, Ogunmodede, who recently returned to the country after Nigeria’s disappointing outing at the ongoing African Nations Championship, revealed that securing a win for his landmark game was his top priority.

“Personally, it was an important game for me because it was my 100th match as head coach of Remo Stars, and I really wanted to win it. But this is football,” Ogunmodede told the media during his post-match press conference.

“We could have lost, and that’s football. I needed the win more; the team needed it too. We know we are champions, and everyone wants to beat the champions.”

The coach also praised his players’ resilience after conceding early, especially given the absence of home advantage and a key player.

“We didn’t play at our traditional home ground, but that’s not an excuse. Personally, I’m satisfied with the result because we didn’t lose. Conceding in the second minute brings panic, but we responded well, even without one of our key players (Victor Mbaoma),” he said.

“We missed our fans, and maybe we could have won if we played at our home ground, but this is football. Familiar grounds matter psychologically, but we’ve played outside our home and won before. We’ve also drawn in Ikenne, so playing there doesn’t guarantee victory.”
