Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, made history again on Sunday night, defeating Mali 78–64 to win their fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s Afrobasket title — and seventh overall.
But while the players celebrated their victory on court, attention quickly shifted online to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as Nigerians began calling on him to reward D’Tigress just as he did with the Super Falcons last week.
Following the Super Falcons’ 3–2 win over Morocco in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations final, Tinubu had rewarded each player with $100,000, a three-bedroom flat, and a national honour (OON). Even the backroom staff received $50,000 each.
That gesture sparked mixed reactions at the time — while many applauded the President’s generosity, others questioned whether the amount was excessive, especially considering Nigeria’s current economic struggles.
Now, D’Tigress’ latest triumph has triggered fresh expectations.
On social media platform X, fans wasted no time demanding equal recognition for the basketball champions.
According to many of them, if the Super Falcons could get that recognition from president, the same must be accorded the victorious D’Tigress.
“Thanks for making us proud. Another 100k USD. God bless Nigeria,” tweeted @Phella1.
“Congratulations, D’Tigress, for winning a fifth consecutive Afrobasket title and seventh overall. $100k in the bag,” wrote @Abdullahayofel.
“The $100k has to go round again. It’s still nothing compared to what they are embezzling. Congrats D’Tigress,” @royaltyuso added.
“I hope $100K each is loading for members of D’Tigress too. Women’s sports has never been this lucrative,” added @islimfit.
“Our girls have won the basketball tournament. Tinubu, please give them their own $100k each and 3-bedroom flat. APC is cooking,” said @TheHN1C.
D’Tigress have been unbeaten on the continent since losing to Cameroon in the semi-final of the 2015 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket, winning the continental title in 2017, 2019, 2021, 2023, and now 2025.
They are also the only African women’s team to win a match at the Olympics, getting to the quarterfinals of the Paris 2024 Olympics.
With public calls growing louder, all eyes are now on the Presidency to see if D’Tigress will get their own share of the $100,000 honours.
