Nigerian athlete Chukwuebuka Enekwechi achieved a personal milestone at the ongoing World Athletics Indoor Championships in Nanjing, finishing fifth in the men’s shot put event with a season’s best throw of 21.25m.
Despite the expectations of fielding a nine-member team, Enekwechi was the sole representative of Nigeria at the tournament due to visa issues and withdrawals that affected the rest of the team. Notably, highly-rated sprinter Ezekiel Nathaniel withdrew from the competition before the heat.
Regardless, In the shot put event, Enekwechi started strong, ranking fifth with a 20.52m throw in the first round. He then rose to second place after his third attempt, achieving a season’s best of 21.25m.

Despite his strong performance, Enekwechi was eventually overtaken by other competitors in the final round, slipping back to fifth place. Nonetheless, he still secured his highest-ever finish in a global championship final, a remarkable feat that highlights his impressive growth.
The top four finishers in the men’s shot put event were Tom Walsh of New Zealand (21.65m), Americans Roger Steen (21.62m), and Adrian Piperi (21.48m), as well as Italy’s Leonardo Fabbri (21.36m).
Rounding out the top ten were Wictor Petersson (20.87m), Andrei Rares Toader (20.64m), Zane Weir (20.63m), Rajindra Campbell (20.45m), and Willian Dourado (20.24m).
