England survived a stern test to book their place in the quarterfinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, edging Mexico 3-2 in a thrilling Round of 16 encounter at the iconic Azteca Stadium on Monday.

Widely regarded as one of the tournament favorites because of their attacking firepower, the Three Lions were instead forced to showcase grit and defensive resolve as they withstood relentless pressure from the co-hosts to secure their place in the last eight.

Roared on by a passionate home crowd, Mexico made an energetic start, pressing England high up the pitch and disrupting their rhythm in possession. The co-hosts fashioned the game’s first clear opportunity in the 15th minute when Raul Jimenez met a cross with a brilliant header, but Jordan Pickford produced an outstanding save to keep the scores level.

Despite Mexico’s early dominance, England struck first in the 36th minute through Jude Bellingham. A swift counterattack ended with Bukayo Saka delivering an inch-perfect cross into the box, which Bellingham headed beyond Raul Rangel to hand England a 1-0 advantage.

England doubled their lead almost immediately. After winning possession high up the pitch, Thomas Tuchel’s side quickly got the ball to captain Harry Kane. The Bayern Munich striker showed great awareness to find Bellingham, who calmly tapped home his second goal from close range to make it 2-0.

Mexico responded instantly to reignite the contest. In the 42nd minute, Julian Quinones capitalised on a loose ball inside the box, firing an unstoppable volley into the roof of the net after being left unmarked to cut England’s lead to 2-1.

The hosts nearly restored parity before halftime as Jimenez once again tested Pickford with a well-placed header, but the England goalkeeper produced another excellent stop. Moments later, Bellingham made a vital defensive contribution, stretching to poke the ball away just before Cesar Montes could pull the trigger inside the box.

England began the second half brightly and almost restored their two-goal cushion in the 49th minute, only for Nico O’Reilly’s superbly struck volley to crash against the woodwork. Five minutes later, the momentum shifted dramatically when Jarell Quansah was shown a straight red card following a VAR review for a dangerous tackle, leaving England to play the remainder of the contest with ten men.

The numerical disadvantage did little to dent England’s confidence as they were awarded a penalty in the 58th minute after Anthony Gordon was brought down inside the area. Kane made no mistake from the spot, calmly converting to stretch England’s lead to 3-1.

However, the drama was far from over. Just eight minutes later, Kane conceded a penalty after kicking Brian Gutierrez inside the box. Jimenez stepped up and couldn’t be denied this time, confidently firing the ball past Pickford to reduce the deficit to 3-2.

The goal injected fresh belief into Mexico, whose supporters responded with deafening encouragement as the co-hosts laid siege to England’s box. With a one-man advantage, Mexico dominated possession and forced the Three Lions deep inside their own half in search of an equalizer.

England, though, refused to buckle under the pressure. Displaying remarkable discipline and resilience, they repelled wave after wave of Mexican attacks before the final whistle confirmed a hard-earned victory and passage into the quarterfinals.

The Three Lions will now meet Norway in the last eight after Erling Haaland inspired the Scandinavian side to a stunning victory over five-time champions Brazil. Mexico, meanwhile, became the second co-host nation to bow out in the Round of 16 following Canada’s earlier elimination at the hands of Morocco.
