More than 20 schools will compete for honours at the third edition of The Athletics School Games (TASG), scheduled for March 20–21 at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex in Lagos.

The two-day event will feature sprints, middle-distance races, and field events, as young athletes from across Lagos schools battle for supremacy in one of Nigeria’s growing grassroots athletics competitions.

Registered with World Athletics, TASG was conceived by Dr. Seun Akinbohun as an annual inter-school meet designed to nurture talent among children aged 4–16.

Speaking ahead of the event, Akinbohun highlighted structural improvements introduced for this year’s edition.

“This year’s edition introduces a significant innovation: primary school events will be separated from secondary school contests, allowing for more races, smoother scheduling, and better recovery time for athletes. Technical officiating, timing systems, and event coordination have also been upgraded to meet higher standards,” she said.

Beyond competition, organisers continue to position TASG as a platform for talent discovery and athlete development, while promoting values such as discipline and fair play.

Akinbohun said this commitment is reflected in the Kashopefoluwa Sportsmanship Award, which recognises athletes and schools that demonstrate integrity, discipline, and respect both on and off the track.

Despite challenges with funding and infrastructure, with much of the competition still self-financed, TASG has continued to grow in participation and visibility within the athletics community.

This year’s edition will also feature the introduction of the 400m hurdles in the senior secondary category, alongside improvements in officiating and broader school participation.

The competition remains strictly schools-based, with clubs and academies excluded to maintain its focus on strengthening inter-school athletics programmes.

Reflecting on the development of the Games, Akinbohun said, “TASG has met many of its objectives—promoting athletics among school children, providing a competitive platform, and discovering emerging talents. Looking ahead, the Games continue to embody a vision of sport as both a stage for excellence and a classroom for values.”
