Nigerian basketball sensation Charles Bassey etched his name in San Antonio Spurs history, recording a remarkable six blocks off the bench in their 126-118 victory over the Utah Jazz.
This feat marked the first time a Spurs player had achieved such a defensive performance since 1984.
Bassey, who recently returned from a lengthy injury, has been given increased playing time due to the absence of star player Victor Wembanyama. In his limited minutes, the 24-year-old has displayed impressive offensive and defensive skills.
In the game against the Jazz, Bassey contributed significantly with 11 points, nine rebounds, one assist, six blocks, and one steal in 27 minutes of action. The Jazz, who held a 20-point lead in the second quarter, were unable to withstand the Spurs’ comeback, fueled by Keldon Johnson’s 25-point performance.
Reflecting on his performance, Bassey emphasized his commitment to protecting the paint: “We started slow as a team, but we were better in the second half. We were sharp in the second half.”
Despite facing numerous dunk attempts, Bassey remained undeterred, stating, “I’m not surprised they kept coming at me even with the blocks. Same thing happens with Victor, even after the blocks, they still keep trying him. Mindset is to protect the paint.”
With Wembanyama, Jeremy Sochan, and Devin Vassell sidelined, Bassey has stepped up to help the Spurs secure two consecutive wins. The Nigerian center expressed his joy at being healthy again.
“I worked a lot to get back. If you ask anybody on the team, this staff, the trainers, they will tell you, man. I was in, I was out, with my teammates, with the coaches, and with the trainers, man. I fought a lot to get back healthy. I’m just happy I’m healthy this season.”
