Edo Queens have lost their place at the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League after suffering a 3-2 extra-time defeat to Ampem Darkoa Ladies. The decisive encounter took place in Cairo, Egypt, on Thursday, October 29, following CAF’s decision to resume the disputed WAFU-B qualifying final, Bold Sports reports.

Mohammed Afishata delivered the decisive blow in the 92nd minute. Her goal handed the Ghanaian side the regional title and secured its qualification for the continental tournament. Edo Queens, meanwhile, saw their hopes of returning to Africa’s premier women’s club competition disappear.

The final originated on September 5, when both teams met at the 4th of August Stadium in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. They finished regular time level at 2-2 before proceeding directly to a penalty shootout.

Edo Queens won the shootout 4-1 and initially celebrated the championship. However, Ampem Darkoa challenged the decision through the Ghana Football Association. The club argued that the competition regulations required extra time before penalties.

On September 26, CAF’s Organising Committee for Women’s Football upheld the protest. It ruled that the officials had breached the regulations by skipping the additional 30 minutes.

CAF subsequently annulled the penalty shootout result. Rather than ordering a complete replay, the governing body directed both teams to resume the contest at the beginning of extra time. The score remained 2-2 from the original meeting.

The two sides returned to action in Cairo on Thursday to settle the outstanding contest. Ampem Darkoa eventually prevailed through Afishata’s 92nd-minute strike.

Edo Queens fall short despite team changes

Edo Queens made two changes to their lineup for the resumed encounter. Kafayat Mafisere and Mary Mamudu entered the team in place of Oluwakemi Adegbuyi and Oluebube Umejiaku.

The two players they replaced were away on national duty. However, the Nigerian champions could not find the equaliser needed to keep their qualification hopes alive.

The defeat ends Edo Queens’ campaign for a place in the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League.
