Nigeria international Philip Otele has suffered a late setback in his potential move to Lazio. The Serie A club explored a loan deal for the FC Basel forward before the summer transfer window closes. However, Basel have already used all their available loan spots.

‎Otele returns to Basel after a mixed spell with Hamburger SV. He made nine Bundesliga appearances and scored once. He also provided one assist during his time in Germany.

‎Lazio had considered Otele as an attacking option. The Italian club reportedly wanted a loan deal with an option to buy.

‎Transfer expert Ben Jacobs confirmed the latest development.

‎“Deal off as Basel have now used all their loan spots.

‎Some discussions over whether a permanent move is possible but nothing agreed as of now.”

‎That leaves Lazio facing a difficult decision. A permanent transfer could still happen. However, the club’s transfer budget makes that option unlikely.

‎Otele remains under contract with Basel until 2028. The Swiss club made his move permanent in June 2025.

‎His numbers later dropped during the 2025/26 campaign. He scored five goals and added four assists in 20 Swiss Super League appearances. He then managed one goal and one assist in nine Bundesliga games for Hamburg.

‎That recent record gives Lazio a clear picture. Otele has shown that he can produce goals. His earlier numbers also attracted attention from clubs across Europe.

‎Otele’s club performances also earned him international recognition. Nigeria handed him his first senior call-up in 2026.

‎He featured in the Unity Cup. He was also part of Nigeria’s preparations for the friendlies against Poland and Portugal. The Nigeria Football Federation confirmed that Otele was expected to join the squad for the Poland game.

‎His international experience could strengthen his appeal. However, his immediate future remains uncertain.

‎For now, Otele faces another decision before the transfer window closes. Lazio’s loan route appears blocked by Basel’s current loan situation. A permanent deal remains possible, but there is no agreement.

‎The Nigerian forward must therefore wait for the next development. His future at Basel remains unresolved as deadline day approaches.
