Philip Otele could leave Basel on loan before the end of the summer transfer window, with the Nigerian forward continuing to attract interest from clubs across Europe’s top leagues.

According to transfer expert Ben Jacobs, Serie A side Lazio have made an enquiry about the 27-year-old and are exploring a potential loan deal with an option to buy.

However, the move is still at an early stage, with nothing agreed between the clubs and no certainty that the transfer will materialise.

Otele spent the second half of the 2025/26 season on loan at Bundesliga side Hamburger. The forward made nine appearances during his short spell in Germany, scoring once and providing one assist.

His limited output meant Hamburger opted against triggering the purchase option included in his loan agreement, leading to his return to Basel.

Before moving to Germany, Otele had enjoyed a strong start to the 2025/26 campaign, registering nine goals and four assists in 32 appearances.

His performances attracted significant interest from clubs across Europe before he eventually joined Hamburger on loan in February 2026.

Otele’s progress earned him his first senior Nigeria call-up just over a month later. He subsequently featured for the Super Eagles during the 2026 Unity Cup, as well as international friendlies against Poland and Portugal.

The forward joined Basel in January 2025 and quickly became one of the Swiss club’s standout performers.

During his first six months at the club, Otele scored nine goals and provided four assists in 21 appearances, making an immediate impact in the Swiss Super League.

His form has dipped in recent months, but a potential move to Lazio could offer Otele an opportunity to revive his career and rediscover the form that initially made him one of Europe’s most sought-after Nigerian forwards.

For now, though, talks remain at the enquiry stage, with Otele’s future at Basel still unresolved before the transfer window closes.
