Nigeria’s preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) have received a major boost after the National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) announced the creation of a seven-member Welfare Committee to support the Super Falcons during the tournament in Morocco, Boldsports reports.

‎The Super Falcons head into the competition as defending champions after securing a record-extending 10th WAFCON crown in Morocco. Nigeria completed a remarkable comeback in the final, overturning a two-goal deficit to defeat hosts Morocco 3-2 and reclaim the continental title. Esther Okoronkwo, Folashade Ijamilusi and Jennifer Echegini scored the goals that sealed the famous victory and completed the team’s “Mission X” campaign.

‎The committee was approved following a meeting between NSC Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade and NFF General Secretary Dr Mohammed Sanusi in Abuja on Wednesday.

‎NFF Executive Board member Aisha Falode will serve as Chairperson, while Ruth David has been appointed Secretary.

Other members include Rt. Hon. Margaret Icheen, Babagana Kalli, Emeka Iyama, Aderonke Tinuoye and Tobechukwu Oluchi.

‎According to Olopade, the Federal Government remains committed to ensuring the Super Falcons enjoy a smooth and successful campaign without distractions.

‎He stressed that authorities want the team to focus entirely on football and avoid any financial or welfare-related issues during the tournament.

‎Nigeria have been drawn in Group C alongside Egypt, Zambia and tournament debutants Malawi for the competition scheduled to run from July 25 to August 16 in Morocco. The Super Falcons enter the tournament as defending champions and one of the favourites to lift the trophy once again.

‎The expanded tournament will feature 16 nations, with the top teams battling for continental glory and qualification places for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. The four semi-finalists will qualify automatically, while another nation will have an opportunity through an intercontinental playoff.

‎Having won 10 WAFCON titles, the Super Falcons remain the most successful women’s national team in Africa. Their dramatic triumph over Morocco in the previous edition reinforced their dominance and ensured they remained champions heading into the 2026 tournament.

‎With a dedicated Welfare Committee now in place and preparations gathering momentum, Nigeria will aim to defend their crown and secure an unprecedented 11th WAFCON title in Morocco.
