World record holder Tobi Amusan, long jump star Ese Brume and NCAA champions Ezekiel Nathaniel, Samuel Ogazi, Kanyinsola Ajayi and Temitope Adeshina headline the 29 athletes invited by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) to begin preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
The AFN announced the 29-man squad on Wednesday, with the athletes scheduled to report to the National Sports Commission’s Commonwealth Games training camp in Abuja on Thursday, June 25.
The invited athletes were selected based on their performances at the recently concluded national trials held at the Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) Sports Complex in Lagos, while others who missed the trials due to visa issues earned invitations based on their current performances.
The squad comprises 14 men and 15 women, with Nigeria set to compete in 18 athletics events at the Games, including the men’s and women’s 4x100m relays as well as the mixed 4x400m relay.
AFN Secretary-General Israel Inwang urged all invited athletes to report promptly to the National Sports Commission camp in Abuja as preparations intensify for the Games.
The men’s sprint squad is led by reigning NCAA 100m champion Ajayi alongside Favour Ashe, Udodi Onwuzurike and Alaba Akintola, while NCAA 400m record holder Ogazi joins Nathaniel, Edidiong Udo and Tyler Johnson in the quarter-mile events.
African shot put record holder Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, javelin thrower Chinecherem Nnamdi and decathlete Jami Schluter complete the men’s field events contingent.
On the women’s side, Amusan leads a strong sprint and hurdles team that also features Rosemary Chukwuma, Tima Godbless, Blessing Ogundiran, Miracle Ezechukwu, Olayinka Olajide and Obi Chukwuka.
Nigeria’s field events squad includes NCAA high jump champion Adeshina, African long jump champion Brume, shot putter Jessica Oji and hammer thrower Oyesade Olatoye, while Patience Okon-George, Ella Onojuvwevwo, Favour Onyah and Esther Joseph make up the women’s 400m and mixed relay group.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games will be held in Glasgow, Scotland, with athletics expected to be one of Team Nigeria’s strongest medal prospects.
