‎Nicole Payne made her return from a long-term ACL injury as she featured for Orlando Pride in a 4-2 home defeat to Washington Spirit, marking her first appearance after a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

‎The Nigeria international came on in the 66th minute, replacing Oihane Hernández, as Orlando Pride tried to regain control late in the contest. Her return follows a difficult rehabilitation journey after a serious knee injury suffered in 2025 while still contracted to Portland Thorns.

‎She remains an experienced figure at international level with the Nigeria women’s national team, having debuted in June 2021 against Jamaica and later featuring in major tournaments including the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and the 2024 Olympic Games.

Payne suffered a season-ending right ACL tear in February 2025 while playing for Portland Thorns during a preseason friendly against Angel City FC at the Coachella Valley Invitational.

‎The injury ruled her out for the entire 2025 NWSL campaign and forced a long recovery process that included surgery and months of rehabilitation work. She only returned to competitive action in 2026 eventually completing her rehabilitation before earning a move to Orlando Pride in January 2026.

‎Washington Spirit started strongly, with Sofia Cantore scoring twice in the 2nd and 6th minutes to give the visitors an early advantage.

‎Orlando Pride responded with resilience. Despite missing a penalty earlier in the half, they fought back through Barbra Banda, who scored twice in the 33rd and 39th minutes to level the match at 2-2 before halftime.

‎The visitors regained control after the break, with Martínez restoring their lead in the 55th minute to make it 3-2.

‎Payne entered the match in the 66th minute, but Orlando could not contain Washington’s attacking pressure in the closing stages. Trinity Rodman added the fourth goal in the 71st minute to secure a 4-2 win for Washington Spirit.

‎After the match, Payne reflected on her difficult recovery and expressed gratitude for the support she received throughout her rehabilitation.

‎“It’s been very difficult and a very long journey. It’s been almost 15 months now, so it’s been a while,” she said.

‎She praised the club’s leadership and medical staff for helping her return to fitness.

‎“I have a lot of gratitude for the staff, for Seb, for the medical staff here in Orlando. I feel very lucky and very blessed to be here,” Payne added.

‎She also highlighted the importance of her teammates during recovery.

‎“I feel like I’ve put in a lot of work to be here with my teammates as well, and my teammates have been my biggest supporters,” she said.

‎Payne further emphasized how important the support system was during her long injury layoff.

‎“To have people support you like this is unreal so I owe it to them,” she concluded.

‎Nicole Payne also expressed her gratitude on her Instagram account following her return from injury, describing the journey as difficult but ultimately rewarding.

‎“Feeling super lucky and blessed to be back. This journey hasn’t been an easy one but it’s been the most rewarding,” she wrote.

‎The result moves Washington Spirit up to second place in the standings with 15 points after Matchday 8, strengthening their position in the early title race.

‎For Orlando Pride, the defeat leaves them in 12th place with eight points, although they still have one game in hand that could help improve their position in the table.

‎Despite the loss, Payne’s return offers Orlando Pride an important defensive boost as she continues to rebuild match fitness after her ACL setback.

‎Her experience at club and international level, including involvement with the Nigeria women’s national team, is expected to be valuable as the season progresses.
