FIFA have officially approved Arthur Okonkwo’s international switch from England to Nigeria, making the goalkeeper eligible to represent the Super Eagles, Bold Sports reports.
The 24-year-old received clearance on Monday and will now be available for selection starting from the next international window, handing Nigeria a timely boost in their goalkeeping options.
Born in London to Nigerian parents, Okonkwo previously represented England at youth level, featuring from the U-15s through to the U-18s before opting to pledge his international future to Nigeria.

His football journey began at Hampstead Academy before a move to Lindus Park, from where he joined Arsenal’s academy as an eight-year-old in 2009. He signed his first professional contract with the North London club in July 2021 and made his senior debut in a friendly against Hibernian shortly after.
Okonkwo gained valuable experience through loan spells at Crewe Alexandra, Sturm Graz, and Wrexham, before sealing a permanent move to the latter in 2024.
Since joining Wrexham, the goalkeeper has established himself as a key figure, making 119 appearances and recording 47 clean sheets across competitions. His consistency has been vital this season as the club push for a Championship promotion playoff spot, currently sitting sixth with 64 points from 40 matches.

With his international switch now confirmed, Okonkwo’s arrival represents a significant boost for Nigeria, offering both immediate quality and long-term stability between the posts. At 24, he has the pedigree, experience, and potential to become not just a present solution, but a cornerstone of the Super Eagles’ future.
