Philip Otele’s first-half involvement was not enough to keep him on the pitch as Hamburger SV altered their approach in a Bundesliga meeting with FC Augsburg, with head coach Merlin Polzin later clarifying that the winger’s substitution was a deliberate tactical move rather than a fitness concern.
The Nigerian attacker started the Week 28 encounter at the Volksparkstadion but was taken off at the break after a challenging opening 45 minutes for the hosts, who went into halftime trailing. One of the defining moments of that half came in the 39th minute when Otele found space to level the contest, only to be denied by goalkeeper Finn Dahmen.
His absence after the restart initially raised fears of a possible injury, but Polzin dismissed those concerns while shedding light on the thinking behind the decision.
The Hamburg boss pointed to issues in his team’s attacking structure—particularly their inability to threaten in behind or stretch Augsburg’s defensive line—as the key reason for the change. He suggested that more aggressive movement and vertical runs were needed to create space and improve their offensive output.

Speaking after the match, Polzin made it clear that the call was strictly tactical and aimed at improving the team’s overall performance:
“No, he was not injured. It is always about improving our game. In the first half, we didn’t like our play because it caused us problems regarding depth and the repeated number of deep runs behind the line.
We needed those runs to become dangerous or to increase the space in the intermediate gaps. In that case, we weren’t satisfied, and it became significantly more dynamic with Jatta. Therefore, I believe it was a good decision for the team.”
Since arriving on loan from FC Basel in January, Otele has contributed one goal and one assist in eight appearances. Despite the early withdrawal, he remains fully fit and continues to feature in national team plans under Eric Chelle.
