‎‎Chibuike Nwaiwu’s journey to the international stage took an unforgettable turn as the defender made his first appearance for Nigeria in their 2-1 victory over Iran, marking a significant milestone in his rapidly rising career.

‎‎The Trabzonspor centre-back was not initially part of the squad but received a late call-up following Calvin Bassey’s withdrawal during the international break. Despite the short notice, the opportunity arrived at a perfect moment for a player whose career trajectory has been on a sharp upward climb since his move from Enyimba two years ago.

‎‎Given the timing of the invitation, many doubted whether Nwaiwu would feature in the encounter, even though the match was played in Turkey, where he currently plies his trade. However, head coach Eric Chelle included him among the substitutes, and his chance came sooner than expected after Igoh Ogbu was forced off with an injury early in the second half.‎‎

Thrown into a high-intensity situation, the 26-year-old initially showed signs of nerves, occasionally holding onto the ball longer than necessary. But as the game progressed, he grew in confidence and composure, playing his part as Nigeria held on to secure the win.

‎‎After the match, Nwaiwu spoke candidly about the experience, describing it as a moment he had long envisioned.‎‎

“It’s a privilege for me to represent my country; it is the dream of every footballer in the world,” Nwaiwu said.

“I am very happy to be here and to have made my debut today. Iran is a very good side that consistently qualifies for the World Cup, but we took our chances and did a great job.”‎‎

He also reflected on the journey that brought him to this point, highlighting the role of faith and determination in achieving his ambition.

‎‎“I believe in God and I believe hard work pays off. Ever since my time in the NPFL, I always told myself I would wear the national team shirt. When I received the message at my club, I was so excited that I nearly missed my flight! Seeing the news and my club’s announcement was a truly great moment.”‎‎

With uncertainty surrounding Ogbu’s injury, Nwaiwu could now be in line for a starting role in Nigeria’s next fixture against Jordan. Should that opportunity come, it will offer him another chance to build on a debut that blended nerves, excitement, and ultimately, fulfillment.‎
