Newly-invited winger Yira Sor has expressed his delight after receiving his first-ever call-up to the Super Eagles, pledging to give his all while continuing to learn and improve within the national team setup.
The 25-year-old earns his maiden senior invitation years after making two appearances for Nigeria’s U-20 side at the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Poland. His opportunity at senior level comes following his inclusion in Eric Chelle’s 23-man squad for this month’s international friendlies against Iran and Jordan.
Speaking in an interview released by NFF Media on Thursday, the Genk winger insisted that the timing of his invitation was not important, stressing that representing Nigeria remains the ultimate honour.
“Whether it’s late or early, the most important thing for me is playing for Nigeria and representing my country. It’s such an opportunity, representing Nigeria is something I find to be a great honor,” Sor said.
The former youth international also revealed his emotional reaction upon receiving the call, describing it as a moment of gratitude and celebration with loved ones.
“When I got the call, the first thing I did was to go on my knees to say thanks to God. Because it’s just his grace. Not everyone has the opportunity to represent their country. Then, I had to call my family, they were so excited, they wished me success. Then I broke the news to my club, the same thing, everyone was happy with me,” he added.
Sor highlighted his versatility in attack, noting that although he is primarily a left winger, he is comfortable operating across the front line.
“I am a natural winger, a left winger, but I can also play as a striker, and a right winger. I play all three positions,” he explained.

On the prospect of sharing the dressing room with established stars in the Super Eagles squad, Sor expressed admiration and a desire to grow by learning from more experienced teammates.
“Not everyone will have the opportunity to share the same dressing room with these players. These are players of high caliber, players with a lot of experience. They’re very good players, I watch them on the television, even at the last AFCON,” he said.
“These are players that for me, I should look up to them. Look at my game, look at what I need to develop and see what I can improve. For me, it’s not about competition, it’s about synergy. It’s about bringing out the best in everyone to help the team, and bring Nigerian football to another level.”

Looking ahead, the winger outlined his commitment to meeting the expectations of Nigerian fans, promising energy, pace, and attacking contributions.
“Giving my best, playing out my heart for this wonderful badge. I know the task ahead, the expectations of over 200 million people. I am a player with a lot of pace and I love to link up play. I hope I can give this to the team, together we can achieve more. I hope I can have a lot of goals and also assists,” Sor concluded.
