…Ella Onojuvwevwo delighted with win after last year’s disqualification

Nigeria’s Ella Onojuvwevwo delivered a sensational performance to win the women’s 400m at the SEC Indoor Championships, blazing to a lifetime best of 50.96 seconds.

The LSU standout dominated the field in just her second 400m race of the season, becoming only the second African woman in history to break the 51-second barrier indoors. Her 50.96s performance now stands as the second-fastest time ever by an African woman over the distance.

It marked a powerful comeback for Onojuvwevwo, who was disqualified from the same event last year following a false start. This time, there was no stopping her.

Georgia’s Dejanea Oakley, who won the other section in 51.21 seconds, finished second overall, while teammate Hannah Douglas placed third in 51.41 seconds.

Reacting after her victory, an emotional Onojuvwevwo reflected on the journey back to the top.

“It’s been a long year and I’ve been working really hard, thanks to my coach who’s been beside me – he’s been my backbone,” she said after her win.

“I push myself every day in practice, hitting every prep. I want to say this is just one rep and it is easy unlike the kind of hard work I put into practice every day doing 450 to 500 meters.

“I thought to myself, this is just one lap – why not just go all out.”
