Werder Bremen have been dealt another worrying fitness concern after defender Felix Agu sustained a new injury shortly after returning from a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
The 26-year-old had only just worked his way back into competitive action following four months out due to a syndesmosis ligament problem that required surgery. That injury ruled him out of several key fixtures, including the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, halting his momentum at both club and international level.
Agu made his long-awaited return two weeks ago, featuring for 28 minutes against Freiburg before earning more minutes in Bremen’s clash with Bayern Munich, where he played 65 minutes. His gradual reintegration suggested he was steadily regaining rhythm and match sharpness.

However, hopes of a full return were cut short at the Millerntor-Stadion. The Germany-born Nigerian was pencilled in to start against St. Pauli but pulled up injured during the warm-up. Subsequent medical examinations confirmed a muscle injury in his adductor area.
An MRI scan conducted at the Paracelsus Clinic on Monday verified the extent of the setback, leaving Bremen without one of their key defensive options for the time being.
Head coach Daniel Thioune expressed concern over the timing of the blow.
“In the situation we are in right now, any failure weighs even more heavily,” Daniel Thioune said about the Nigerian full-back.

“Felix had only just returned from his ankle injury. We hope he will be available to us again as soon as possible,” the German coach concluded.
Bremen’s struggles this season make Agu’s absence even more significant. The club currently sit 17th in the Bundesliga standings, hovering dangerously close to relegation to the 2. Bundesliga. With survival hanging in the balance, the loss of a recently recovered defender represents another obstacle in an already challenging campaign.
For Agu, it is yet another frustrating interruption at a crucial stage of the season.
