Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle continues to face an uncertain future as contract extension talks with the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) have reportedly stalled, casting doubt over his long-term stay with Nigeria.

Chelle’s stock rose significantly following the conclusion of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where he guided Nigeria to a commendable third-place finish. The achievement elevated the Malian tactician’s profile on the continental stage.

During the tournament itself, Chelle was already attracting interest. Tunisia were said to have approached him after their round of 16 exit, but he turned down the opportunity in order to remain focused on his AFCON campaign with the Super Eagles. After that, he was also linked with the national teams of Angola and Gabon.

Following the AFCON, speculation intensified. Reports emerged that Ligue 1 side Marseille had considered Chelle as a potential option after Roberto De Zerbi’s departure, further underlining the growing demand for the 48-year-old coach.

However, despite his impressive performance with the Super Eagles, negotiations over a contract extension with the NFF have failed to reach a breakthrough.

According to SportyTV football journalist Kamogelo Motecwane, discussions have stalled, with sources indicating that Chelle is seeking improved terms after his AFCON exploits, while the NFF are reportedly cautious about meeting his salary demands.

The uncertainty has opened the door for renewed interest from other parties. The Angolan Football Federation are understood to have returned with a significant offer aimed at luring Chelle away from Nigeria, especially as talks with the NFF remain unresolved. In addition, Tunisian giants Esperance and Al-Shabab are also monitoring the situation closely.

Fueling speculation further, Chelle has recently signed with a new sports agency, Wilders Sport, a move that many interpret as positioning himself for a potential next step in his career.

With no agreement yet in place, the coming days and weeks could prove decisive. Should negotiations continue to drag on, Nigeria risk losing a coach whose reputation has grown considerably since leading the Super Eagles to the AFCON podium.
