A member of the organising body, Nigeria Ballers in Diaspora, Mr. Anthony George, has said the Ibadan Basketball Championship has continued to grow in competitiveness and impact since its first edition, with a strong focus on player development.
Speaking ahead of the 5th edition of the tournament, Mr George, who owns BetterGeorge Sports Management, said noticeable improvement has been seen in players who have featured in previous editions of the competition.
According to him, the championship was created to sustain basketball as a legacy in Ibadan by providing consistent competitive platforms for young athletes.
“An athlete can train regularly, but without competitive games there will be little or no improvement,” he said, noting that the ₦1 million cash prize introduced for this edition is expected to further raise the standard of play.
Mr George also described the tournament as an important avenue for talent discovery, particularly for young male and female players.
He stressed that Nigeria Ballers in Diaspora is intentional about giving female basketballers equal opportunities to showcase their skills alongside their male counterparts.
Looking ahead, Mr George expressed optimism that the championship will gain wider recognition in the coming years, both locally and internationally.
The 5th Ibadan Basketball Championship, organised by Nigeria Ballers in Diaspora, will be held from February 6 to 7, 2026, at the Adamasingba Stadium in Ibadan, with male and female teams competing for the ₦1 million top prize
