Burkina Faso sealed second place in Group E of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a hard-fought 2–0 victory over Sudan in their final group match at Casablanca on Wednesday, Bold Sports reports.
Both teams entered the contest level on three points after earlier wins over Equatorial Guinea, who finished bottom of the group. With qualification on the line, it was Burkina Faso who struck first and ultimately did enough to secure all three points, while Sudan progressed as one of the tournament’s best third-placed sides.
The first goal came in the 16th minute when Lassina Traoré capitalised on a perfectly delivered cross from Stéphane Aziz Ki. Left unmarked inside the box, the striker made no mistake, powering a close-range header past the Sudanese goalkeeper to give the Stallions an early lead.

Sudan were handed a golden opportunity to draw level eight minutes later. Al Gozoli Nooh won a penalty after being fouled by goalkeeper Hervé Koffi, but the winger failed to convert from the spot, squandering a crucial chance to change the momentum of the match.
Burkina Faso controlled large spells of the second half as they searched for a second goal to put the game beyond doubt. While clear-cut chances proved elusive, Sudan threatened on the counter and pushed for an equaliser as the match wore on.
The Stallions finally wrapped up the victory in the 85th minute as Arsène Kouassi, surging forward from full-back, was played through on goal by Dango Ouattara and calmly slotted the ball past the goalkeeper to make it 2–0 and seal the result.
The win sees Burkina Faso finish second in Group E with six points, while Sudan end third on three points. Both nations advance to the round of 16 and will now turn their focus to the knockout stages which will begin in January 2026.
