Progression is the clear focus for both Mozambique and Cameroon as they meet in their final Group F fixture. The match will be played at the Grande Stade d’Agadir with kick-off at 8 pm.
While this will be the first time the two nations face each other at the AFCON finals, familiarity is not lacking. It is their ninth overall meeting, and history heavily favours Cameroon, who have won seven of the previous eight encounters. Mozambique’s solitary victory came decades ago, with the Indomitable Lions claiming each of the last seven meetings.
Their rivalry dates back to qualifying for the 1984 Africa Cup of Nations, a campaign that ended with Cameroon lifting the trophy for the first time. Mozambique appeared to have the upper hand after a stunning 3–0 win in Maputo in April 1983, but Cameroon responded emphatically with a 4–0 victory in Yaoundé to progress 4–3 on aggregate, before going on to be crowned champions in Côte d’Ivoire.

The numbers underline Cameroon’s dominance. All eight previous clashes have produced a winner, yielding 27 goals at an average of 3.4 per game. Cameroon have scored 21 of those goals, averaging 2.63 per match, while Mozambique have managed six. The Indomitable Lions have kept four clean sheets compared to Mozambique’s one.
Cameroon have also had the better of Mozambique in AFCON qualifying, eliminating them in campaigns for the 1984, 2000, and 2021 tournaments. The 2000 qualifiers were particularly emphatic, with Cameroon winning 1–0 at home before a crushing 6–1 away victory in Maputo.
Their most recent meetings came during 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying when Cameroon again prevailed. A 3–1 win in Douala, inspired by a Choupo-Moting brace, was followed by a 1–0 success in Tangier, sealed by Michael Ngadeu, as Cameroon advanced to the finals in Qatar.
As they meet again with knockout qualification on the line, Mozambique will be hoping to defy history, while Cameroon will look to rely on their pedigree and proven dominance to book a place in the next round.
