The Super Eagles camp has been dealt a double injury blow, with defender Ryan Alebiosu and striker Cyriel Dessers set to miss Nigeria’s Round of 16 fixture at the very least.

Team officials confirmed on Tuesday that Alebiosu, who made his Super Eagles debut in the 3–1 victory over Uganda, could be sidelined for the remainder of the tournament after sustaining a deep cut to his right leg. Dessers, meanwhile, has yet to feature at the competition and is nursing a thigh injury.

In a statement, the team disclosed: “Debutant Ryan Alebiosu sustained a deep cut on his right leg. Uncertainty surrounds his availability for the rest of the tournament. Cyriel Dessers has a thigh problem and is scheduled for a scan today.”

While Alebiosu is expected to begin immediate treatment, the full extent of Dessers’ injury will be determined on Wednesday following his scan.

It remains unclear whether both players will stay with the squad for the remainder of the tournament or return to their respective clubs to continue their recovery.

Nigeria have enjoyed a strong start to their Africa Cup of Nations campaign, winning all three Group C matches to secure a place in the Round of 16.

As at the time of filing this report, the Super Eagles are the only team to have achieved a perfect group-stage record, although Algeria could join them later on Wednesday when the North Africans face Equatorial Guinea.
