Morocco head coach Walid Regragui has credited unity and passionate home support for his side’s resurgence at the Africa Cup of Nations after a commanding 3–0 victory over Zambia secured top spot in Group A.
The hosts entered the tournament as favourites but endured a shaky start, edging Comoros before settling for a draw against Mali – results that sparked criticism and raised concerns about mounting pressure on the squad. Monday’s emphatic display, however, proved a turning point as Morocco finally delivered a performance that matched expectations.
The 50-year-old, who had faced boos from sections of the crowd and later apologised following the Mali draw, turned his attention to the supporters after the Zambia win, highlighting togetherness as the foundation for success.

“We play as a team of 12. We feel the whole country behind us,” Regragui said. “The supporters shouted and sang from the first minute. It was a benchmark match in terms of unity.”
The coach also acknowledged the emotional nature of Moroccan fans and the importance of rebuilding confidence.
“Moroccans are naturally emotional; they need confidence,” Regragui added. “After the draw against Mali, there was frustration. We want to make the fans happy. The players want this cup, and if we unite, God will help us.”

With Morocco set to co-host the 2030 World Cup, the tournament also offers an opportunity to showcase the country’s infrastructure, but Regragui insists results remain the priority.
“From now on, every match will be a final,” he warned ahead of the knockout-stage clash in Rabat.
