…Cameroon eyes 6th AFCON title in Morocco
Cameroon and Gabon will renew a familiar Africa Cup of Nations rivalry when they meet in their Group F opener on Wednesday evening in Agadir, with kick-off scheduled for 20:00 local time.
The fixture marks the third meeting between the two Central African neighbours at the AFCON finals. While Cameroon arrive with one of the competition’s most distinguished records, recent tournament history shows Gabon have often posed a difficult challenge for the Indomitable Lions.
Gabon hold the advantage in their previous AFCON encounters. The Panthers recorded a 1–0 victory in the opening group match of the 2010 finals before holding Cameroon to a 0–0 draw in the decisive group game of the 2017 edition.
The Central Africans are yet to score against Gabon at AFCON, although on both occasions it was the Indomitable Lions who progressed to the knockout stages, with Gabon exiting at the group phase.

The 2017 meeting proved pivotal. Hosts Gabon required a win to advance, while Cameroon needed only a draw. The goalless result eliminated Gabon and propelled Cameroon towards a title-winning campaign, which ended with victory in the final in Franceville. It underlined Cameroon’s ability to manage high-pressure group situations and deliver in the latter stages of the tournament.
This year’s finals mark Cameroon’s 22nd AFCON appearance and a sixth consecutive participation, reflecting a tradition of consistency that dates back to their debut in 1970. Five-time champions and seven-time finalists, Cameroon remain the second most successful nation in AFCON history. Since 2015, they have lost just one of their last 12 group-stage matches, although they have conceded goals in each of their last six such games.
The five-time champions will be without key figures André Onana and Vincent Aboubakar for the tournament. Aboubakar, who scored eight goals at AFCON 2021 and played a major role in qualification, is among the notable absentees. Despite qualifying unbeaten and conceding only twice, Cameroon struggled defensively at the 2023 finals, conceding eight goals before exiting in the round of 16.

Gabon return to the finals for their ninth AFCON appearance, having missed the 2023 edition. The Panthers arrive with encouraging group-stage form, unbeaten in their last six AFCON group matches and undefeated in their opening game at the last five finals.
Captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang leads the squad at his fifth AFCON, having already been involved in 10 goals at the tournament across previous editions.
With history suggesting tight contests and fine margins, Wednesday’s encounter is set to play a significant role in shaping the early balance of Group F at the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations.
