The Federal Government of Nigeria has fulfilled its housing, land and national honours pledge to members of the Super Eagles following their runner-up finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
Ahead of the team’s opening match of the new AFCON campaign, players from the AFCON 2023 squad formally received title documents for residential houses and land allocations, as well as certificates for national honours promised by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Each player was allocated a residential apartment and a plot of land, with housing located in either Abuja or Lagos and land grants situated in Abuja. The rewards were pledged by President Tinubu after Nigeria’s second-place finish at the tournament held in January and February 2024.
The presentation took place on Monday at the Super Eagles’ team hotel in Fez, Morocco, where the squad is camped for ongoing national team duties. The ceremony was led by National Sports Commission chairman Shehu Dikko, alongside Nigeria Football Federation president Ibrahim Musa Gusau and other government and sports officials.
Dikko confirmed that the processing of the national honours, housing and land allocations approved by the President had been completed, with official allocation letters issued in fulfilment of the government’s commitment to rewarding excellence and national service.
He also clarified the category of honours awarded to the players, noting that most squad members received the Member of the Order of the Niger (MON). Ahmed Musa and Victor Osimhen were awarded the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), having previously received MON honours, while William Troost-Ekong was conferred with the Member of the Federal Republic (MFR) following his emergence as Player of the Tournament at AFCON 2023.
Nigeria Football Federation president Gusau welcomed the development, describing it as an important signal of trust and accountability between the government and national team players.
“The President graciously promised houses, land and national honours to the players, and we felt there was no reason to move forward without fulfilling that promise,” Gusau said. “This handover reflects the government’s commitment to recognising the sacrifices and achievements of our players.”
