…Super Eagles to face Tanzania on Tuesday in AFCON opener

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has stated that the team will not underrate any opponent at the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as they begin their campaign against Tanzania on Tuesday at the Fez Stadium.

For the second consecutive AFCON, Osimhen is expected to lead Nigeria in their quest for glory. However, the team must navigate a seemingly manageable Group C, which includes Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda.

Although Nigeria are favourites to secure all three points in their opener against the East African side, the Galatasaray striker reiterated that the team will approach every match with maximum focus.

“We’re going to war, and Tuesday is the first one. We will give everything, and we’re not underrating anyone,” Osimhen told Sporty TV during the team’s media parley on Sunday in Fez, Morocco. “There are many favourites in this competition, and we’re going to give our all to realise our dream of winning the AFCON.”

On the Super Eagles’ ambition to win the country’s fourth AFCON title, and the first in over a decade, Osimhen admitted it will not be easy but expressed confidence in his teammates and the coaching staff.

“I believe so much in this squad, I believe in the coaching staff and everyone associated with the team. It’s not going to be easy because we still have a long way to go, but I am positive about this squad,” he said.

Osimhen recently returned to competitive football after suffering a hamstring injury in the final of the FIFA World Cup Africa Qualifying Playoffs against DR Congo. He played two games at club level to regain match fitness before joining the national team.

“I am okay,” the 26-year-old said regarding his fitness. “I just came back from a hamstring injury. A big shoutout to my club, Galatasaray – they have been very supportive and ensured I had some games before reporting for national duty.”

The Super Eagles will be looking to improve on their 2023 AFCON performance, where they reached the final but lost 2–1 to hosts Ivory Coast.
