…Success Oyibu impressed at 2025 MTN CHAMPS Athletics Classics

Nigerian sprint prospect Success Oyibu has signed with Baylor University, marking another major step in her fast-rising career after a standout 2025 season across the local and continental circuit.

Baylor welcomed the 18-year-old to Waco in a post on their X page (formerly) page on Wednesday evening.

“Welcome to Waco, Success Oyibu!

“Oyibu comes to Baylor with a PR of 11.42 in the 100m and 23.56 in the 200m. She was the 200m champion and 100m silver medalist at the U18/U20 African Championships,” Baylor Track and Field wrote on X formerly Twitter.

Oyibu rose to prominence at the MTN CHAMPS Athletics Classics in Benin in March, where she delivered one of the meet’s breakthrough performances. She clocked a lifetime best of 23.71s to win the Junior Girls’ 200m title after earlier taking silver in a tight 100m final.

She then shone at the African U18/U20 Championships in Abeokuta, winning gold in the U-20 women’s 200m, leading a Nigerian sweep with Chioma Nweke and Lucy Nwankwo. She had earlier claimed silver in the U-20 women’s 100m behind Nweke before anchoring Nigeria’s U-20 women’s 4x100m relay team to gold in 45.58s alongside Nwankwo, Anita Enaruna and Nweke.

Those performances placed her among Nigeria’s most sought-after junior athletes heading into the U.S. recruitment cycle, and her move to Baylor continues a strong Nigerian tradition at the Texas-based programme.

After the 2021 World U20 Championships in Nairobi, Baylor signed three Nigerian athletes in January 2022 namely national 400m hurdles star Ezekiel Nathaniel, World U-20 400m champion Imaobong Nse Uko, and men’s javelin bronze medallist Nnamdi Chinecherem.

Oyibu will now hope to follow in the footsteps of Nathaniel, who became the first Baylor student-athlete to be named a finalist for the prestigious Bowerman Award.

The 22-year-old, who recently turned professional, narrowly missed out on a medal at this year’s World Championships, finishing fourth behind Rai Benjamin, Alison dos Santos and Abderrahman Samba. He also placed third at the Diamond League final and broke the Nigerian record in the men’s 400m hurdles six times in 2025.
