Super Eagles legend Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha has dismissed reports suggesting he is interested in contesting for the presidency of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), describing the claims as “false and misleading.”

In recent hours, several reports and social media posts have circulated, claiming that the former Nigerian captain could step forward to lead the NFF amid growing calls from fans for ex-internationals to take charge of Nigerian football. The clamour comes in the wake of the Super Eagles’ recent struggles, with the team now at risk of missing a second consecutive FIFA World Cup.

Nigeria’s qualification hopes for the 2026 FIFA World Cup took another blow after they were held to a 1-1 draw by South Africa at the Free State Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein. The result leaves the Super Eagles six points behind leaders South Africa and three points behind second-placed Benin, with just two matches remaining in the qualifiers.

However, in an Instagram statement posted on Wednesday afternoon, Okocha firmly refuted the rumours, clarifying that he has not spoken to anyone about any interest in contesting for the NFF presidency.

“Hello everyone, I just want to use this opportunity to say that the news and post that have been circulating is false. I have not said or spoken to anyone about Nigerian football or any interest in becoming NFF president,” Okocha wrote.

“I’m currently in Kigali attending SPORTSBIZAFRICA, so I’m pleading with the people spreading false information to stop.”

The former PSG and Bolton Wanderers star also expressed empathy for frustrated Nigerian fans but urged them to remain patient and hopeful.

“I appreciate my people and understand the frustration we’re going through, but be rest assured that better days are ahead. Let’s keep believing. I know it’s not easy, but we are all in it together. God bless, and please let’s stay strong,” he added.

The Super Eagles now face a daunting task as they prepare to take on Lesotho and Benin in October, needing nothing short of a miracle to secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the USA, Mexico, and Canada.
