Lagos is set to make history next month as it hosts the E1 Lagos GP, the first-ever E1 Electric Powerboat Championship in Africa, Bold Sports reports.

The event will run from October 3 to 5, 2025 on Victoria Island and is expected to attract over 250 global participants, including international athletes, investors, and celebrities.

The Lagos State Government, in partnership with the organisers of the E1 Series, said the event will position Lagos as a hub for sustainable innovation, sports tourism, and clean energy technology. Officials also project the championship will generate at least $100 million in new investments.

At a press conference in Lagos, Sam Egube, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) and Deputy Chief of Staff to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, said the E1 Lagos GP represents a major breakthrough for Nigeria.

What is E1 Lagos GP?

“The E1 Lagos GP is more than a sporting event. It is history in motion,” Egube said.

“For the first time, the world’s only all-electric powerboat championship comes to African waters, placing Lagos alongside Monaco, Venice, and Jeddah as a global host city. The event will stimulate a significant amount of growth. The race alone will not add anything less than $100 million to investments in Lagos.”

Rodi Basso, Chief Executive Officer of the E1 Series, revealed that Lagos won hosting rights after competing with several global cities. He confirmed that nine international teams, including those backed by Didier Drogba and Will Smith, will compete in Lagos.

“The E1 Series showcases the technical prowess behind sustainable marine innovation,” Basso explained.

“Boats can now leverage alternative power and unique architecture to minimise environmental impact, even in the most challenging ocean conditions.”

Other officials stressed the wider benefits of the event. Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Toke Benson-Awoyinka, encouraged artisans, traders, and hospitality businesses to tap into the expected surge of tourists. Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, noted that the race would encourage greater use of water transport and complement the Omi Eko project, which will introduce 72 electric boats to Lagos waterways.

Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, added that the championship aligns with Governor Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES+ agenda, boosting Lagos’ global profile while driving new revenue streams.

The E1 Lagos GP 2025 is more than just a race—it is Lagos’ statement of intent as Africa’s City of Aquatic Splendour, racing into the future with innovation, sustainability, and world-class sports entertainment.
