Super Eagles skipper William Troost-Ekong has expressed confidence ahead of Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda, stressing that the squad remain fully focused and that he is determined to help secure qualification for the tournament, Bold Sports reports.

The Super Eagles will take on Rwanda’s Amavubi at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Saturday, in a must-win clash to revive their World Cup qualification hopes. Nigeria currently sit fourth in the group with seven points, trailing leaders South Africa by six points while sitting one point behind second-placed Rwanda and third-placed Benin.

While many believe that qualification for the World Cup is now impossible, Troost-Ekong, in an interview with sports journalist Ademola Victor, assured that the team remain fully focused and committed to the challenge ahead.

“We are really focused. We are excited to have the opportunity again to play these World Cup qualifiers. We know how much that means to everyone in Nigeria, including ourselves. So yeah, we are really focused for the game on Saturday now,” he said.

The captain provided an update on the players in camp and their mood ahead of the must-win clash: “The boys are all here now, from this evening the team is complete. The mood is very focused and everyone is looking forward to the game on Saturday.”

Troost-Ekong further noted that every player understands the significance of qualifying for the World Cup, adding that he and the team are determined to ensure they do not miss out on the tournament: “We talk about it all the time. It’s every player’s dream. I don’t think I need to tell them how much it means but I did tell them what my experience was and I’m very much hungry for another time at the World Cup on the global stage.”

“We understand the gravity of these games and I think even for the young players, everyone wants to make a name for themselves and want to achieve something with Nigeria so there is a real sense of urgency and focus,” he added.

With four matches remaining in the qualifiers, Troost-Ekong stressed that the Super Eagles will approach each fixture with a winning mentality, beginning with their crucial encounter against Rwanda: “Nothing has changed from the games we played before March. We still have to win these games. We are trying to make the most of the opportunity now, and we are very focused on the game against Rwanda.”
