Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) champions Remo Stars were held to a 1-1 draw by Rivers United in their season opener at their temporary home ground, the MKO Abiola Sports Arena, Abeokuta, on Friday, Bold Sports reports.

The champions, eager to kick off the new campaign with a statement victory, were stunned early on when Aniekeme Okon struck for Rivers United within the opening minutes, putting the visitors ahead.

However, Remo Stars responded almost immediately as Victor Mbaoma, making his second debut for the club, announced his return in style by netting the equaliser in the ninth minute. The joy was short-lived though, as the experienced striker picked up an injury soon after and was replaced by Adama Goita, another new signing from Djoliba AC.

Despite the setback, Remo Stars continued to push for the lead, and Samuel Anakwe came close to putting the hosts ahead late in the first half, only to see his header brilliantly denied by the Rivers United goalkeeper.

The second half was tightly contested, with Remo Stars dominating possession but struggling to break down a well-organised Rivers United defence. Head coach Daniel Ogunmodede introduced Alex Oyowah and later brought on Joseph Abah, Haruna Hadi, and Samson Olasupo in search of a winner.

Regardless of the late pressure, Finidi George’s Rivers United remained resolute at the back, securing a valuable point away from home.

With the result, Remo Stars extended their remarkable 51-match unbeaten run at home in the NPFL, a streak dating back to their 3-1 defeat to Kano Pillars on May 28, 2022. Meanwhile, Rivers will view the draw as a positive result as they aim to reclaim the NPFL title.
